Unico's Next Chapter - Traveller ULW10 : Dev Talk
Hello there!

As we prepare for the launch of the Unico Traveller ULW10 Kickstarter campaign, we wanted to sit down and have a chat with our amazing community about this upcoming project.
The Traveller ULW10 features three video input options: HDMI, VGA, and YPbPr component video.
While we've been sharing videos of the ULW10 running on a variety of consoles and PCs, one of the questions we hear the most is:
"Why did you choose YPbPr component video?"
Or more specifically:
"Out of all the analog video options, why did you choose the one that might require people to buy an extra cable? Why not composite? Why not AV?"
That's a fair question, and the answer comes down to one thing:
Space.
Fitting everything, including the signal board inside the back of a compact 10-inch monitor meant we had to make some difficult design decisions. There simply wasn't enough room to include every video input we wanted.
When we looked at how people would actually use the ULW10 day to day, the choice became much clearer. We knew HDMI and VGA had to stay because they provide the easiest access for modern devices, PCs, and video converters.
Choosing the analog input was much more challenging. Composite, S-Video, component... there are so many different standards that supporting every option simply wasn't possible on our very first compact retro monitor.
So we had to make a compromise, and we decided to go with YPbPr component video, the input that would provide the best balance between compatibility and image quality.
But this isn't the end of the story.
It's not that we're planning to leave out the other video inputs forever. As we continue developing larger signal boards for future Traveller products, we'll have much more room to support additional input options.
Wait... does that mean...?
Well, I'm not going to spoil too much today.
As the saying goes, time will tell.
Thank you for joining us for our very first Traveller ULW10 Developer Talk. As the project moves forward, we'll continue sharing more behind-the-scenes stories, development insights, and the decisions that shaped the Traveller series.
Thank you all for your incredible support. If you believe in what we're building, we'd love for you to back us on Kickstarter not just to support the ULW10, but to help shape the future of the Traveller lineup.
